In September 2018, Bundy Mackintosh and I (Bob Jones) trekked to the remote village of Bung in Eastern Nepal. We had a big project in mind – to start a charity to fund the building of a much-needed hospital in the village. That will require a lot of money, which ideally will come from large companies and organisations. But that’s something for the future. For the time being, there is an urgent need for medicines. Their cupboard is almost bare:
This is the village’s entire stock of medicines, as at 29 September 2018 when the photo was taken. Bung has 4,500 inhabitants, including more than 1,000 children. Please help us to raise money to help buy much-needed medicines and essential medical equipment.
The other health-related problem is open fires. Every house has a fire in the centre of the main living area, which is used for cooking and heating. Smoke from the fire is ever-present, even at night. Many children have bad coughs and runny noses. We want to help by installing ‘chimneys’ in as many houses as possible. These are like large cooker hoods with an extractor fan. The smoke is expelled out through the side wall of the house. The photos below show houses without and with extraction hoods. The third photo is of a ceiling in a house where there is no chimney. The beams are covered in soot and grime.
Our target is £10,000, which will go a long way towards improving the health of the local people. There is a volunteer doctor and a midwife in the village, but their scope is severely limited without the necessary medical supplies. Also, installing as many ‘chimneys’ as possible will also help to improve the villagers’ health, especially that of the children.
Please donate as much (or as little) as you feel appropriate. Every donation will be acknowledged and a full list of donors will be sent to the village, which they will be able to display on a noticeboard in the pharmacy. All money raised will be split equally between the purchase of essential medicines and the installation of chimneys. There will be no administration costs. Donors are asked to pay a small charge to the hosting website (Chuffed.org).
